Man jailed over $30m cocaine racket
A man has been jailed for at least 14 years for his involvement in a $30 million cocaine importation racket that used baggage handlers at Sydney airport.
In the NSW District Court on Friday, Shane Desmond Hatfield, 43, of Bondi, was jailed for knowingly taking part in the supply of a large commercial quantity of cocaine and for conspiring to import the drug.
Judge Helen Morgan jailed him for a minimum of 14 and a maximum of 26-and-a-half years.
Hatfield, who was arrested in May 2005, will be eligible for release on parole in May 2019.
Former Balmain rugby league player Les Mara is already serving a minimum 13-year jail term over his part in the plot while a third conspirator, Michael Hurley, died of cancer in 2007.
The syndicate conspired to bring $30 million worth of cocaine into Australia from South America between 2004 and 2005, using baggage handlers at Sydney airport.
